This is a great way to use up those old towels, and old clothing thatrsquo;s hanging around, plus yoursquo;ll save a lot of money on nappies:-)

Donrsquo;t make lots of these at once, then discover they donrsquo;t fit your babyEach baby is different, so make one, try it out on the baby, then adjust your pattern according to how well or badly it fits.

You will need:

1 disposable nappy
1 marker pen
Masking tape
Large piece of card
Tracing paper or greaseproof paper
1 large old towel
1 piece of patterned fabric or big old t-shirt, nightie, etc. That you can cut up
Elastic
Velcro or Aplix
Thread
Sewing machine
Overlocker/serger (optional)

1 Find a disposable nappy that fits well.

2 Stretch it out and stick it to a large piece of card with masking tape.

3 You can see or feel the inner soaker pad inside the nappy.Draw around it with the marker pen.Take a piece of tracing paper (or greaseproof paper) and stick it over the nappy.Using the marker pen, trace around the soaker pad.Remove the tracing paper from the cardboard, cut out the soaker shape and label it ldquo;inner soakerrdquo;.

4 Take another piece of tracing paper (or greaseproof paper) and stick it over the nappy.Using the marker pen, trace a line ? from the edge of the soaker pad.Remove the tracing paper from the cardboard, cut out the soaker shape and label it ldquo;lay-in soakerrdquo;.

5 Using a marker pen draw a horizontal line ? from the top of the nappy.

6 Draw two vertical lines ? from the edges of the tabs.

7 Draw a curved line, ? from the edges of the soaker pad.

8 Extend these lines down below the end of the nappy.

9 Draw a horizontal line ? from the lower edge of the nappy.

10 Draw along the bottom edge of the nappy ldquo;wingsrdquo;.

11 Connect all your lines using smooth curves.

12 Cut out your nappy pattern.

13 Place the pattern pieces on the towel and cut out two nappy shapes, three inner soaker shapes and three lay-in soaker shapes.

14 Place the nappy pattern on the patterned fabric and cut out a nappy shape and (if you have enough fabric ) a lay-in soaker shape.

15 Take one nappy-shaped piece of towel, and place the three inner soaker pad pieces onto it, fairly centrally, like this.Sew a line down the centre.Sew around the edges with a zigzag stitch to secure the pads and prevent fraying.

16 Take a long piece of elastic and stitch the end at this position on the leg edge of the piece of towel with the pads on it.Stitch back and forth once or twice to secure the elastic.Keeping the elastic well stretched, but the fabric flat, sew along the elastic with a zig-zag stitch (preferably a 3-step zigzag which looks like this) till you reach this point at the other end.Make sure you sew through the elastic as you go, not over each side of it.Cut the elastic.

17 Do the same with the other side.

18 Take a long piece of elastic and stitch the end at this position at the top of the piece of towel with the pads on it.Stitch back and forth once or twice to secure the elastic.Keeping the elastic well stretched, but the fabric flat, sew along the elastic with a zig-zag stitch (preferably a 3-step zigzag which looks like this) till you reach this point at the other end.Make sure you sew through the elastic as you go, not over each side of it.Cut the elastic.

19 Overlocker (serger):Pin the patterned fabric to one side of the elasticated nappy shape ndash; right side up - and the second towelling piece to the other side.I try to put the side with the soaker on it facing the second towelling piece, but it really doesnrsquo;t matter. Now simply serge around the edges. If you are not confident about getting this right, you could sew around the edges with the sewing machine first, to make sure yoursquo;ve caught all the layers together.

No overloc ker:Pin the patterned fabric to the two towelling pieces.Put the patterned fabric at the top (right side downwards), the plain towelling piece in the middle and the piece with the soaker on it at the bottom. Stitch around the edges, about half an inch from the edge, leaving a fairly big gap at the front edge for turning.Clip the edges.Turn the nappy in the right way and stitch the gap closed.

20 Take a strip of Velcro or Aplix (the soft, looped side) and stitch it along the front of the nappy, as shown in the picture, just like the coloured strip on a disposable.

30 Stitch two small pieces of Velcro or Aplix to the inside of the ldquo;wingsrdquo; on the nappy, as shown in the picture.

31 Overlocker/serger:Take the three lay-in soaker shapes. If you have a patterned fabric piece too, place it on top. Stitch them together down the centre, using a zigzag stitch.Serge around the edges. This soaker can now be laid in the nappy to add extra absorbency.

No overlocker:Take the three lay-in soaker shapes. If you have a patterned fabric piece too, place it on top, right side downwards.Stitch around the edges, about half an inch from the edge, leaving a gap at one side for turning.Clip the edges.Turn the soaker in the right way and stitch the gap closed. This soaker can now be laid in the nappy to add extra absorbency.

32 Put nappy on baby

If you make a nappy using these instructions, please let me know how well they worked for you, or how you changed it to suit you.
